Actually, this Parisian pair grew up enjoying “the whole revival rock scene: Jack White, the Strokes, the Libertines”. According to Armand Penicaut, who obviously has low expectations when it comes to deities, “Pete Doherty was some kind of an Elvis to me”. His partner, Ulysse Cottin, was drawn to “mainly the jazz and rock’n’roll singers – they gave me this desire to use my craziness and my energy in a musical way. People like James Brown, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald”. They share, too, a love of Brazilian music and bossa nova, of “old folk, like Elizabeth Cotton or Karen Dalton”, and of gypsy jazz. Ann Wants to Dance – one of several Papooz tracks that insinuates its way into your brain and stays there – was the result of Penicaut trying out the finger-picking folk guitar technique. Then he sat down with his friend and his other half and the idea occurred to him, as it would anyone, “Ann wants to dance”. At which point he thought: “Man, what a great title for a song.” A year later, it’s had 2.25m YouTube views. “I don’t think I can handle the amount of hipster in this video ,” quipped one commenter. We don’t think we can handle this much catchy. It might have been born out of folk but the rhythm has the casual funkiness of something created in Royal Studios in Memphis, Tennessee in the mid-70s. Then there’s the breeziness of the vocal. Who’s that girl? “It’s me,” Penicaut laughs. “No, it’s not treated. I just sing high.”

His records as Fatboy Slim also helped to popularise the big beat genre, which achieved mainstream popularity in the 1990s. Cook first rose to fame in the 1980s as the bass guitarist for the Hull-based indie rock band The Housemartins, who scored a UK number-one single with their a cappella cover of Isley-Jasper-Isley's "Caravan of Love". After the band split, Cook formed Beats International whose debut album spawned their signature hit, "Dub Be Good to Me", which was another UK number-one as well as going on to become the seventh best-selling single of 1990 in the UK. Cook then went on to join numerous other acts, including Freak Power who had a hit single Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out, Pizzaman, and The Mighty Dub Katz, to moderate success. Cook adopted the Fatboy Slim moniker in 1996 and released Better Living Through Chemistry to critical acclaim. Two worlds have collided, and what glorious and odd worlds they are. After Primus and The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger completed a successful summer tour, Les Claypool and Sean Lennon decided to combine their abstract talents into a project called The Claypool Lennon Delirium. Their efforts thus far have spawned the upcoming full-length release Monolith of Phobos that will be released on June 3rd via ATO Records. “Sean is a musical mutant after my own heart,” said Claypool. “He definitely reflects his genetics--not just the sensibilities of his dad but also the abstract perspective and unique approach of his mother. It makes for a glorious freak stew.” In astronomical terms, the Monolith of Phobos is a large rock on Mars’s Phobos moon. As the phrase implies, this album is an old-school approach to a psychedelic space rock record. The Claypool Lennon Delirium will begin their Summer tour on June 4th and the touring band includes Les Claypool (bass, vocals), Sean Lennon (guitar, vocals), Mark “Money Mark” Ramos Nishita of the Beastie Boys (keyboards), and Paul Baldi of the Fungi Band (drums).

The heavy-rock trio Dommengang hail from a little bit of everywhere. Guitarist Dan “Sig” Wilson has been gigging around the Pacific Northwest psych scene for years now, occasionally sitting in with Castanets and Scout Niblett, among others. With roots in Oregon and Alaska, drummer Adam Bulgasem and bassist Brian Markham settled over in Brooklyn, roughly 3000 miles away from their bandmate.
