Bombon - "Pow Wow"

Surf rock and roll band from San Pedro, California, formed in 2009.While surf rock plays a vital role in this San Pedro trio’s repertoire, girl groups and their later poppy garage-punk offshoots are undoubtedly a close secondary influence. By name alone, their 2015 cassette EP A Date With Bombón (Burger Records), harkens back to both, and the vocals are generally heavens-high. There are rowdier cuts like “Somebody Told Me,” that nod to archetypal punk crass, just like the vast majority of their jittery debut LP, Las Chicas Del Bombón, released five years earlier. Their latest single “¡Xicanista!” is all of those things — but most importantly, it’s pure badassery. Could it be the Chicana feminist punk anthem of the ages? The corresponding video completes the empowerment package: The band and buds are seen hanging out, rollerskating, spray painting graffiti and roller skating while spray painting graffiti. When they face the camera to declare, “Somos Xicanistas! Somos, somos feministas!” over a wobbly surf riff — damn, we just really wanna join their crew.

Guantanamo Baywatch - Barbacoa (Live on KEXP)

Conjuring up a swampy fusion of surf, garage rock, and rockabilly that suggests the Cramps hitting the beach midway through a drunken bender, Guantanamo Baywatch are a group from Portland, Oregon determined to bring good, trashy fun back to rock & roll. Guantanamo Baywatch were formed in 2009 by guitarist Jason Powell and bassist Chevelle Wiseman; Powell, originally from Seattle, coined the name for a fanzine piece, and liked it enough that he asked his friend Wiseman (who had moved to Portland from Palo Alto, California) to join a new band that would use the handle.

Daniel Johnston - Tell me now

Daniel Dale Johnston (January 22, 1961 – c. September 11, 2019) was an American singer-songwriter and visual artist regarded as a significant figure in outsider, lo-fi, and alternative music scenes. Most of his work consisted of cassettes recorded alone in his home, and his music was frequently cited for its "pure" and "childlike" qualities.[5] Johnston spent extended periods in psychiatric institutions and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He gathered a local following in the 1980s by passing out tapes of his music while working at a McDonald's in Austin, Texas. His cult status was propelled when Nirvana's Kurt Cobain was seen wearing a T-shirt that featured artwork from Johnston's 1983 album Hi, How Are You. Beyond music, Johnston was accomplished as a visual artist, with his illustrations exhibited at various galleries around the world. His struggles with mental illness were the subject of the 2005 documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston. He died in 2019 of what is suspected to have been a heart attack.

Saâda Bonaire - You Could Be More As You Are

Saâda Bonaire is the disco/world music project duo out of Bremen, Germany that was never meant to be. Formed by Bremen DJ Ralf Behrendt in 1982, Saâda Bonaire was a unique concept band centered around two sultry female vocalists (Stefanie Lange and Claudia Hossfeld) who would be joined by dozens of local musicians culled from the local immigration center. Originally signed to EMI in 1982, their first and only single, “You Could Be More As You Are” was produced in Kraftwerk’s studio by legendary Matumbi, Slits and Pop Group producer Dennis Bovell. There they were joined by jazz icon Charlie Mariano (previous collaborations include Gong, Stan Kenton and Charles Mingus) who lent his talents on saxophone. The resulting sound was a unique fusion of husky female vocals, Eastern instruments, dub and African music aesthetics, drum computers and synthesizers.
